Studies in the Field of Psychotherapy

Prof. Dr. Ali Keyvan has been involved in education and training in the field of psychotherapy since 2002. As a psychiatrist, his first choice of treatment has always been non-pharmacological interventions. Initially, he focused on cognitive-behavioral therapies and supportive psychotherapies in general, but later, his work in the psychoanalytic field gained momentum.

Studies and Perspectives in Psychotherapy

He is one of the country’s leading authorities on behavioral and psychoanalytic theories, theorists, psychotherapy techniques, methods, and more. He advocates using both major schools of psychotherapy in selecting individualized and appropriate psychotherapy. He has integrated the knowledge and experience of both major schools of psychotherapy into his contemporary and modern psychotherapist perspective.

Behavioral school psychotherapy methods and techniques are equally effective with drug treatments (proven by evidence-based scientific studies). They aim to provide relief and functionality, in other words, to achieve rapid relief from symptoms (remission). Psychoanalytic psychotherapy methods, on the other hand, do not prioritize relief from symptoms or providing relief. Psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapies aim to understand the meaning of symptoms and their psychological origins. Awareness, insight, and therefore radical change (character, personality, temperament, etc.) are prioritized. Therefore, psychotherapy is long-term and arduous. However, it is also a path to healing and development.

The philosophy of the Keyvan School of Psychotherapy and Psychiatry is to synthesize behavioral and psychoanalytic approaches. If necessary, the client should use medication or relaxation-oriented psychotherapy methods (behavioral school). If the individual desires healing or spiritual growth, psychoanalytic methods should be used at the appropriate time and with appropriate transitions.

Studies and Perspectives in the Field of Psychotherapy
Turkish Psychiatric Association

He has been a member of the association for many years. He also has membership and volunteer activities in many of the association’s work units. He is one of the volunteer pioneers of the training program for psychiatry residents, which began two years ago in the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Unit.

Until now, psychiatry residents have had access to a wide range of psychotherapy training programs through the association. However, for many years, training in psychoanalytic therapies was prevented from starting due to various reasons and obstacles. In the past two years, psychiatry residents across the country have now gained access to a well-equipped psychoanalytic psychotherapy program. Prof. Dr. Ali Keyvan is one of the volunteers and idealists behind this pioneering and valuable psychotherapy program.

IstGA

Prof. Dr. Ali Keyvan is a founding member and conductor (group psychoanalyst) of the Istanbul Institute of Group Analysis (IstGA). IstIGA is the first and only Group Psychoanalysis association in Türkiye. Founded in 2014, IstGA has been a member of the EFPP (European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy) for many years.

As of the 2021-2022 term, after a long and arduous process, IstGA has become a member of EGATİN (EGATIN) and its training institutions. The significance of EGATİN membership in terms of its potential contribution to the field of psychotherapy in our country is explained below.

EGATIN

Furthermore, IstGA has been accepted as a member of the European Group Analytical Training Network (EGATIN) as of 2022. This signifies significant significance, as it now fully paves the way for the training of group analysts in our country. Prof. Dr. Ali Keyvan continues to represent IstGA as an EGATIN delegate.

He completed six years of psychoanalysis with Gila OFER. He completed the necessary training for Group Psychoanalysts under the supervision of Chris JOANNIDIS and Uri LEVIN. Efforts to train Group Psychoanalysts are ongoing.

KDTD

He is a certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT) by the European Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (EABCT) and the Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy Association (CBT). He is one of the first qualified psychotherapists in the country to be trained in this field of psychotherapy. He continues to actively practice, train, and supervise behavioral school psychotherapy.

Other Psychotherapy Activities

He is experienced in hypnosis, EMDR, psychodrama, sexual dysfunction treatments, schema therapy, breathing therapy, and similar therapy schools and methods. He currently provides training and supervision in therapy to aspiring therapists at universities, associations, and private institutions.

Training at Istanbul Aydın University

He continues to serve as a faculty member at the university, where he primarily teaches clinical master’s and doctoral degrees. In other words, he plays an active role in the training of future psychotherapists. Trainer in behavioral school psychotherapy methods (cognitive behavioral therapy, meta-cognitive therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance-commitment therapy, schema therapy, mindfulness therapy, EMDR, etc.)
